Personal information

Radu Bumbăcea is a postdoctoral researcher at LMU, working with Prof. Monika Betzler, with the support of a Walter Benjamin scholarship. Radu's project relates to understanding other people's mental states, especially emotions, and to the phenomenon of sharing their predicament. He is interested both in the nature of these phenomena and in the ethics and potential limits of them. More broadly, he is interested in moral psychology, in particular philosophy of emotions, and in ethics and aesthetics.

Originally from Bucharest, Radu studied mathematics and philosophy in Cambridge. He did his Master's in London and wrote his PhD dissertation in Leeds on what we can learn from literary fiction. Subsequently, he was a postdoctoral researcher in the Thumos group at the University of Geneva working on the particularities of emotions towards fiction and on their role in the appreciation of art, under the mentorship of Julien Deonna and Fabrice Teroni.
